The Cathedral of Messina (Italian: Duomo di Messina; Basilica Metropolitan Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta) is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Messina, Sicily. Already episcopal seat of the Diocese of Messina, in 1986 it became the archiepiscopal seat of the Archdiocese of Messina-Lipari-Santa Lucia del Mela. In June 1947 Pope Pius XII granted her the status of minor basilica. The present building is the final result of some twentieth-century reconstructions, which took place following the disastrous earthquake that struck Messina in 1908 and the heavy damage that occurred during the Second World War. The tower houses the astronomical clock of Messina, the largest astronomical clock in the world.
